Rear Loaders the most common type of refuse loader truck bodies, in which waste is typically deposited into a hopper at the back of the truck. This can be done manually by waste collectors tossing bags or emptying bins, or, more commonly in modern trucks, with the aid of a hydraulic lifting mechanism that automatically empties large carts. The operator rolls and attaches the trash container to the lifting mechanism at the rear of the truck.
Once the waste is in the hopper, a hydraulic compactor (often a moving plate or shovel) pushes the waste into the main body of the truck, compressing it. This allows the truck to carry a larger volume of waste before needing to be emptied.
The contents of the bin are then mechanically dumped into the truck hopper.
Rear loaders can handle various types of waste and are often well-suited for commercial pickups and residential routes. They can also handle bulkier items that might not fit into other types of collection vehicles.
Rear loaders are now also offered as split-body loaders to allow collection of more than one waste stream in a single pass.
The split body loader, available in various split configurations as per the requirements of the route, collect both municipal waste and recyclables.
