This project provides a quantification and analysis of the business of manufacturing tank trailers that transport liquids and liquified gases in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Close to 60% of all tank trailers manufactured in North America are liquid tank trailers, and about 45% of liquid tank trailers manufactured in 2018 are estimated to cater to the oil and gas industry.
This report presents market data and forecasts for asphalt/hot product tank trailers, compressed gas tank and tube trailers, cryogenic tank trailers, DOT 407/412, DOT 406 and 3A sanitary tank trailers, which together comprise shipments from North American manufacturers valued at over $1 billion.
Hot product tank trailers are non-coded trailers mainly designed to haul liquid asphalt. In addition to liquid asphalt, these trailers are also used to transport emulsions and residual products, including sulfur, lubricating oil, coal tar and pitch.
Compressed gas tank trailers are high-pressure containers used for transport of gas in liquid form. These trailers are used to transport gases that have been liquefied by increasing the pressure and compressing them to the liquid stage.
Cryogenic tank trailers transport gases in liquid form at extremely cold temperatures. These are insulated trailers that transport gases which cannot be liquefied by pressure application and must be subjected to extreme cold temperature to become liquid.
Cryogenic trailers and compressed gas trailers are two distinct categories within the liquid tank trailer segment and feature a unique set of manufacturers for each product category. These two categories are niche markets with very few units manufactured annually.
DOT 407 and DOT 412 tank trailers comply with codes established by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Liquid tanks that haul crude oil and mild corrosive chemicals are required to be DOT 407 compliant. DOT 412 tanks are designed for hauling highly corrosive acids, bleach, mixed acids and organics. Most manufacturers currently fabricate tank trailers that conform to both DOT 407 and DOT 412 specifications to provide customers with an option of transporting a wider range of chemicals and acids.
Tanks designed for transport of flammable or combustible fuels, such as gasoline, diesel, biodiesel, E85, ethanol, methanol, racing fuel, aviation fuel, avgas (aviation gas) and Jet-A fuel, and certain chemicals such as alcohol, are required to comply with DOT 406 specifications.
Tanks that haul dairy and food products are required to conform to 3A sanitary standards. Liquid sanitary tank trailers are used for transporting warm or cold products, including milk, wine, liquid eggs, juices, whey and potable water.
Fifty-one liquid tank manufacturers have been profiled in this report. The liquid tank trailer industry has several small, regionally focused manufacturers; over 50% of all identified manufacturers fabricate fewer than 100 units each annually.
While tank trailers manufactured in the United States and Canada are predominantly for domestic use, a significant percentage of tank trailers manufactured by Mexican fabricators is exported to several countries worldwide, including the United States and Canada.
