This report is a rigorous investigation and analysis of manufacturers and markets for hoist and container truck/bodies—products that are used to collect and transport material in the waste, recycling, scrap and demolition industries. The report provides estimates of competitive shares and market size breakouts by chassis class for each of the following truck/body types:

Roll-off Hoists
Hooklift Hoists
Load Luggers and Container Carriers

Hoists are standardized equipment with not much difference in product design across manufacturers. Very few companies exclusively concentrate on hoists. This product is typically manufactured along with roll-off trailers and other truck equipment.

Estimated shipments of truck-mounted roll-off/cable hoists, hooklift hoists, and container carrier bodies in North America in 2020 were valued at $232 million.

Two types of truck-mounted hoists are analyzed in this report: roll-off (cable) hoists use a cable system that hooks onto a container and pulls it up onto the back of the truck, using hydraulics to winch the cables. Hooklift hoists use a hydraulic lift connected to a hook to pull a container onto a truck bed or push it off in the dumping motion.

Two additional types of container handling equipment are discussed – load luggers and container carriers. Load luggers are useful and economical when haul distances are short, when large quantities of heavy waste are generated, and where the use of conventional refuse collection vehicles is not practical. These feature a vertical cargo-handling device that resembles a door frame (horizontal cross member) with a hydraulic hoist mechanism. Hydraulic cylinders activate the lifting arms for mounting and dismounting lugger containers.

Container carriers transport individual stationary containers and can also load multiple containers onto a trailer to transport to a job site. When equipped with a rotator, these carriers can invert the container and unload its contents into a top-loading, larger refuse container. These operate only with hydraulics and do not feature chains to hook onto containers.

Hoist and carrier trucks primarily serve the waste management industry, which is generally viewed as “resilient” and less susceptible to large swings in demand with economic cycles. Therefore this segment experienced less contraction in shipments due to Covid19 as compared to other truck/body segments, such as those servicing industries such as construction, mining, and oil and gas drilling.
