Detachable gooseneck lowbed trailers also known as removable gooseneck trailers feature a neck that detaches and is pulled away from the lower deck along with the tractor, so that the trailer’s front end can be lowered to the ground, clearing the way to drive the load onto the deck of the trailer.
These trailers are mainly used for hauling construction equipment, cranes, forklifts, and other self-propelled equipment that can be driven on and off the main deck. When the trailer is loaded and ready to go, the tractor and gooseneck are backed into position.
Detachable gooseneck trailers may or may not feature beavertails and ramps. Detachable goosenecks with beavertail or ramps allow front and rear loading of the trailer
Detachable goosenecks can be hydraulically or mechanically detached from the lowbed trailer
Mechanical detachable goosenecks employ cables to lift the gooseneck and detach it from the trailer. The gooseneck is hooked to and unhooked from the trailer using a ramming force that is exerted by driving the tractor toward or away from the trailer.
In a hydraulic detachable gooseneck trailer, hydraulic cylinders are used to raise and lower the trailer bed. A small cylinder attaches the gooseneck to the truck, enabling removal of the neck from the trailer to allow large equipment to be driven over the front onto the deck of the trailer for transportation.
Hydraulic detachable gooseneck trailers may be ground bearing or non-ground bearing.
