Utility Bodies are open service truck bodies designed for installation of aerial devices or digger derricks on the floor of the body.
Customer segments for utility bodies include electric utilities, telecommunication and cable companies and tree care companies.
These units are mounted both on pickup truck chassis and cab chassis. Equipment size, body size and required payload combine to determine the type of chassis on which the utility body is mounted. Bodies with larger aerial devices and digger derricks are mounted on medium- and heavy-duty cab chassis. Some utility equipment is van-mounted, in which case the aerial equipment is mounted on the roof of an enclosed service van body.
Length of the bodies ranges from 8 ft. to 14 ft. and the standard height of the external compartments is similar to service truck bodies at 42 inches.
Service truck/bodies used for mounting utility equipment are manufactured by both utility equipment manufacturers and by service truck/body manufacturers.
Most companies offer steel and aluminum utility body options to customers, with few companies manufacturing utility bodies in fiberglass.
