Refuse loader truck bodies all perform the same function, with the main differences between body types being in the side of the truck from which the cart loading operation is performed, and the degree of automation of the waste collection operation. Most refuse loaders, regardless of style or type, feature compaction by way of a hydraulic ram that compresses the load to maximize the volume of material they can handle before dumping.
Refuse loader truck body types includes (i) Front Loaders; (ii) Automated Side Loaders; (iii) Manual Side Loaders/Recyclers; and (iv) Rear Loaders.
| Manual Sideloader & Recycler trucks manually load waste from the side of the truck. Manual side loaders often feature a drop frame—low sill height—which allows collectors to empty trash containers and load garbage bags along with material left on the curb into the side loader. The low sill height in manual side loaders allows loading of trash containers and material left on the curb. | ![]() |

Recycling trucks are designed to manage source separated waste, collecting and hauling it to a multi-stream materials recovery facility. These bodies feature separate compartments for materials such as glass, plastic, paper, and cans. With the growing adoption of split-body loaders, part of the market for pure recycling trucks has been taken over by such trucks. |
